Easy Halloween Ghosts Your Kids Will Love to Make

I had an epiphany.  While I consider myself a crafty person, I generally have to rely upon someone else’s ideas.  I am a sponge.  That I am.  Even if I do have an original thought I never can get it to turn out like I wanted to case in point the “Boo” costume I made for my oldest daughter years ago.  The intention was to recreate the monster costume that “Boo” wears in the Monster Inc. movie. My vision vs reality. Well, you can see for yourself. Thank goodness she was so darn cute. The eyes flopped as she toddled and it made us all giggle.

So I was particularly pleased when this little inspiration struck and I have to say, that as far as I am aware this idea is 100% me.  The idea came when I was walking past a neighbour’s house all decorated for Halloween.  They had what looked like skulls hanging in white nylons strung along their porch.  I was wondering if I could do a similar effect only with little ghosts.

I think I came up with something better and far cuter. Even better yet, this was an easy project the kids could help me with.  I was actually able to draw something that was pretty close to what I had imagined and my two girls (they were 7 and 5 at the time) were able to sew this up with minimal help from me.  All I had to do was keep threading the needle for them.  Of course, I couldn’t leave my youngest out who was 3 but wanted to “help”. So I placed the stitches for him and let him pull the needle through the fabric so he felt like he was doing something. The system worked quite well if a little slow.

What You Will Need

  • paper
  • white felt
  • white thread
  • googly eyes
  • sewing needle
  • black thread or felt for mouth
  • cotton batting for stuffing
  • Craft glue

Depending on size or how many ghosts you’d like to make you can get at least two out of one felt square.  Ghosts are double sided. Felt squares are cheap and easy to find at the dollar store.

Instructions

  1. Draw a ghost on paper, play around until you get a shape that you like. Cut it out and this becomes your pattern for cutting the ghosts out of felt. You will need two ghost shapes per ghost.
  2. Pin your ghosts together.
  3. Using a overcast stitch, sew along the edges but leave a space so you can insert stuffing.
  4. Using cotton batting, break off fluffs and stuff the ghost. I stuffed it fairly light because it was a small project and I just wanted to see it have some shape but not be overdone.
  5. Using tacky crafting glue, stick the eyes and mouth on. If you’re chosen to sew a mouth, sew a mouth.
  6. Attach string to hang.

Super simple and super cute! I call them my EASY PEASY GHOSTIES. I attached a piece of black string to my ghosts and strung them up all along our porch.

This craft was so easy the kids and I wanted to keep going and so we designed bats to go along with our ghosts.

We still have those ghosties and bats in our Halloween bin. They’ve stood up well to the weather, although we do have to re-glue the eyes now and then.

Sigh, some wonderful Halloween memories.
